Just be careful about what types of plastic bottles you use and reuse. Most are not meant to be reused and can leach toxic substances when washed with warm water or as they age. That's why stainless steel is preferred. (Our family has reused plastic bottles for years but we have not migrated to glass bottles and stainless steel bottles. However, glass bottles are big and heavy so not practical for most uses.) For a more elegant bottle design, how about the bottle from New Wave Enviro products: www.newwaveenviro.com/6-liter-tinted-stainless-steel-p-83.html ?

After further consideration, I see the benefit of using a plastic water container, and am weaning myself off of bottled water. It does make environmental and economic sense.

Well, I searched for “stainless steel water bottle” like you suggested, Philip, and <a href="http://www.kleankanteen.com/products/klean-kanteens.html" rel="nofollow">this is the first result I came across</a>. Not exactly awe-inspiring design.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/New-Wave-Enviro-Stainless-1-Liter/dp/B001LNUIWU" rel="nofollow">Not much better on Amazon.com</a>. Why do people make these so tall and ugly?

Still, you're right. I need to suck it up and carry around one of these stainless steel brutes. They also probably would be useful for whacking people upside the head. My plastic water bottles hardly cause a flinch anymore.

Thanks for writing…and caring.

Wow, Tom, where have you been living.... The answer is simple. Buy a stainless steel water bottle and simply refill it. It is reusable, safer than plastic, can be washed if required, same size as other water bottles, water-tight, can be clipped to your belt or packsack if you want, and even takes hot beverages like tea (black, green, herbal; hot or ice). It is even more economical in the long run. This is a win-win-win (environment-health-budget). Everyone in our family has one. There are many companies that sell them: just google "stainless steel water bottle". Banish those plastic bottles forever. (Bonus: you can even brand them and use them as promotional items for employees or customers.
