Archive for the 'twitter' Category

It was almost impossible last week to turn on television in the United States without seeing or hearing a reference to actor-gone-psycho Charlie Sheen.

Just as people slow to check out a new accident site along the highway, we couldn’t get enough of Charlie. But his “fame” will soon be compared to a shooting star, which casts a bright light as it burns itself out and plummets to the ground.

What’s next for him? My former Eastern Illinois University colleague Paul Pinderski sent me a couple of possible career paths:

     The 'Good" Charlie Sheen:
     Chicago Cubs Third-base Coach

The first would reflect the “good” Charlie, who would do more than play a baseball player like he did in the movie, “Major League.”

Paul could see Charlie playing an important role as an assistant manager for the Chicago Cubs. He would generate a lot of energy, aggression, and traffic on Twitter–all of which the Cubs could use this season.

     The 'Bad" Charlie Sheen:
     Vatican Assassin Warlock

Or, if Charlie’s “in-the-blink-of-his-eyes” recovery from substance abuse doesn’t last–and why wouldn’t it?–the “bad” Charlie already has put out feelers to be hired as the world’s first Vatican Assassin Warlock.

What do you think Charlie Sheen’s next move should be?

Caitlyn touches a fish!My daughter, Caitlyn, and I are packing today in preparation for a 13-hour drive tomorrow with about 40 middle-schooler and adult leaders heading to Splash Camp.

The camp is a six-day combination of Christian worship, fun and unexpected growth through challenges. What challenges? Last year we had to use teamwork to get through a challenge course. My daughter had to overcome her dislike for touching fish when she happened to catch the largest walleye in the area up to that point (see picture).

So no blogging until we get back. I may try to Tweet a little (@commakazi) and update my Facebook page via mobile phone. But maybe not—we’re supposed to be leaving the technology behind. I need the phone so that parents can reach me or their kids in an emergency.

Campaign to help hungry kids I found some time to finally sign up for a Twitter account, and decided to follow two IABC-related twitterers: Barb Gibson, IABC Chair, and the IABC/Chicago Chapter Twitter group.

Barb’s Tweets included an appeal to contribute to “The Pledge to End Hunger,” a campaign designed to provide meals and raise awareness of childhood hunger. I just visited the website and pledged to support the campaign by spreading the word. The other ways to support the campaign are to donate money and to volunteer at one of many locations in the U.S. working to end hunger.

For each pledge made via the online form, Tyson will donate 35 lbs of food product (the equivalent of 140 servings) to Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. If the goal of 1,000 people taking the online pledge is reached, a semi-trailer will deliver 140,000 meals to the food bank.

I like the way that the campaign organizers have used the Intranet and Twitter to help promote the campaign. Visit the site to read more, take the pledge, and help campaign organizers and Tyson to make a difference for hungry kids.
